How will I be creative today? What will I do to make the extraordinary out of the ordinary? We are all creative in our own unique way. Sawyer (2006) writes, “Everyday creativity isn’t about the isolated individual and his or her special genius thought process. It’s about social encounters, and it happens more in the action of execution that in thinking or planning” (p. 296). I’ve found creativity through my interactions with others. I will continue to revisit Ubuntu and apply it to my communication with others. If I am to be the Servant leader I strive to be, I must value Ubuntu. This is a choice in leadership that directly impacts my ability to serve others. This knowledge of Ubuntu is something I will continue to revisit throughout my life, as a test of my ability to release judgment.
As a leader who values Ubuntu, I am invited to differentiate between discernment and judgment. This requires a deep understanding that everyone makes sense of the world differently. By striving to view each human interaction as an opportunity to see and know the other, I can inspire others to do the same. The way I choose to handle human interactions is creative. I strive to not only hold a high value for Ubuntu, but I also strive to use emotional intelligence to invite others to grow with me on their lifelong leadership journey. Through using a framework of emotional intelligence, I will constantly challenge my assumptions and invite others to do the same. This is Servant leadership and a demonstration of making something as ordinary as a conversation with another person, a truly extraordinary experience!
It will be my intention to go about life finding the joy in every human interaction. I can only do that successfully through listening without judgment. In doing so I will serve others. Finding joy takes creativity and something that I would like to say is my gift to the world. This is one way I can be creative everyday. It is a commitment to, as Pink (2012) writes, “Adopting a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions” (p. 196).
